Matthew Edwards - Director of bands

Mr. Matthew Edwards is excited and honored to serve as the new “Director of Bands” for McKinney North High School Band Program! 

Prior to his appointment at McKinney North, Mr. Edwards served as the Associate Director of Bands at Rock Hill HS in Frisco, TX and as the Assistant/Associate Director at Wylie East High School in Wylie, Texas. During his tenure as a high school director, programs have earned recognition as a BOA Regional finalist, UIL Area finalist, and State Marching Contest participant. Additionally, ensembles under his direction have consistently earned superior ratings at UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluations, as well as at various concert festivals throughout North Texas. 

Mr. Edwards is in his 13th year of teaching and holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education degree from the University of Houston and a Master’s of Music degree from Southern Methodist University. He began his teaching career as an assistant band director at Otto Middle School in Plano, Texas. During this time, he spent five summers on the brass staff of the Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps, serving as Brass Caption Head in 2018 and 2019. His involvement as a performer in the DCI activity started with the Revolution DBC in 2011 and concluded with Phantom Regiment in 2012, where he aged-out as a member of the trumpet section. His professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity.

Outside of the band hall, Mr. Edwards is an avid sports fan who enjoys the great outdoors, cooking (and eating), and spending time with his family. He is married to his beautiful wife Maria, a choir director in Wylie ISD, and together they are the proud parents of their daughter, Macie, and their son, Milo.
